Dr. John A. Yagiela, D.D.S., Ph.D.

Dr. John A. YagielaDr. Yagiela received his D.D.S. degree from the UCLA in 1971 and his Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of Utah in 1975.  From 1975 to 1981 Dr. Yagiela taught dental therapeutics and pain control at Emory University.  He came back to UCLA in 1982 and enrolled as an anesthesiology resident at the School of Medicine.  Dr. Yagiela is currently Professor and Chair of the Division of Diagnostic and Surgical Sciences, Coordinator of Pain and Anxiety Control, and Head of the Dental Anesthesiology Residency Program at the UCLA School of Dentistry. He is also Professor of Anesthesiology at the David Geffen School of School of Medicine at UCLA and attendee at the UCLA Center for the Health Sciences.  He is an in-office examiner for the State of California for both moderate sedation and general anesthesia. Former positions include: chairman of the Fellowship Committee of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, editor of Anesthesia Progress, and editor of The Pulse, the Society’s newsletter.  Dr. Yagiela also served previously as president of the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists and as president of the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology.  He was a member of the American Dental Association’s Anesthesiology Steering Committee and is a consultant to the Council on Scientific Affairs and Commission on Dental Accreditation.  Dr. Yagiela is, in addition, lead editor of Pharmacology and Therapeutics for Dentistry and co-author of Local Anesthesia of the Oral Cavity.  Past president of the Pharmacology, Therapeutics and Toxicology Group and the Anesthesia Research Group of the International Association for Dental Research, Dr. Yagiela is actively engaged in research on pain and anxiety control and maintains a practice limited to dental anesthesiology.
